Will liberalism save us from the environmental crisis? Dr. Manuel Rodeiro argues that it can in his forthcoming book Liberalism’s Environmental Promise. This talk explores liberalism’s capacity to respond to the current environmental crisis. It presents a neutralist, Rawlsian defense of nature that does not rely on any specific substantive account of nature’s value. Instead, it argues for the political value of developing an approach capable of securing overlapping consensus among a diverse range of reasonable perspectives.
Manuel Rodeiro is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Mississippi State University. He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from The Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY) in 2020 and holds a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law (2010).
